The capital of Rajasthan, Jaipur, often referred to as the “City of Royals,” holds the distinction of being India’s first planned city, meticulously designed by Vidyadhar Bhattacharya.

Founded in 1726 by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II, the Kachhwaha Rajput ruler of Amer, Jaipur was created to accommodate the growing population of Amer, the former capital. Guided by the principles of Vastu Shastra and Shilpa Shastra, the city was laid out with precision and foresight.

Jaipur’s layout includes nine blocks, with two dedicated to state buildings and palaces, and seven grand gates providing entry to the city. Shops were thoughtfully arranged into nine rectangular sectors, making Jaipur the first major city in North India to be built from scratch with such meticulous planning. In 1876, Maharaja Ram Singh II ordered the city to be painted pink in honor of the visit of H.R.H Albert Edward, Prince of Wales, giving Jaipur its famous nickname, “The Pink City.”
